PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The MEDICAL ASSISTANT program at Americation Career and Training School ACTS is designed to make an individual equipped with skills required to work in the healthcare field. The 3 main skills that you will learn in this program are Medical Assistant Skills, Phlebotomy Skills and EKG Skills. At successfully completion of the program the students will be eligible for 6 national certifications. The Clinical Medical Assistant Certification, Phlebotomy Technician Certification, EKG Technician Certification, Cardiac Monitor Telemetry Technician Certification, Cardiac Arrhythmia Technician Certification, and Blood-borne Pathogen Certification. Our program was designed keeping in mind the job market and the competitiveness of skills that the employer expects from an employee.
The Medical Assistant program has a curriculum that is educationally flexible and provides career mobility. Graduates are prepared to practice safely within their identified scope of practice and to promote, protect, and improve the health of the diverse community. Emphasis is on technical skills necessary to perform personal care to complex patients, implementation of selected portions of care plan including clinical skills, EKG, and phlebotomy under the supervision of a medical practitioner. Upon graduation students will be considered competent for entry level positions as a Clinical Medical Assistant or Medical Assistant.

MA MODULE 1: DIRECT CARE SKILLS
Clinical Skills Section Description
This comprehensive course is designed to prepare the student to provide direct care and services to clients throughout the life span under the direct supervision of a Physician. Special emphasis is placed on the care of older clients focusing on their physical, social, emotional, spiritual, and cultural needs. This includes developing skills in procedures, communication, and observation, charting and reporting. The student will be made aware of how State and Federal laws as well as policies and procedures of the institution govern the practice of the medical assistant. Some examples of clinical skills may include wound care management, taking vital signs (temperature, pulse rate, respiratory rate and blood pressure), use of personal protective equipment (PPE), measuring height and weight, vision test, hearing test, cranial nerve testing, skin assessment, autoclave use, pulmonary function test, infection control, anatomy & physiology, nutrition, emergency situations and more.

MA MODULE 2: EKG
EKG Section Description
The program prepares the candidate as an EKG Technician responsible for performing diagnostic tests to access the heart rhythm and rate in patients. EKG’s are also performed before and after operations, during physicals, examinations of patients over 40, for patients with a history of heart disease, when patients are experiencing chest pains and when the Doctor deems it necessary. The well trained EKG technician is an integral part of the management of patients with heart disease. The EKG Technician may also clean equipment, maintain and process data reports.

MA MODULE 3: PHLEBOTOMY
Phlebotomy Section Description
This course provides phlebotomy instruction to the student with a working knowledge of collecting blood while emphasizing on patient safety, quality assurance, universal, standard precautions and legal issues and complications. Techniques taught during this course are Evacuated tube method, Syringe method, Winged infusion set, Capillary blood collection, Glucose testing, Bleeding time, Blood smear & Urinalysis. This program prepares learners to act as entry level Phlebotomists. The Phlebotomist is a member of the health care team who collects and processes lab specimens, educates patients in specimen collection procedures, and performs waived laboratory tests. Phlebotomists may also have responsibilities for information processing, training, and quality control monitoring. Most Phlebotomists work in hospital or clinic labs, blood centers, nursing homes, insurance companies, research facilities, or public health.

In this section you will be learning about the contents of the pharmacology module, this would include, fundamentals of pharmacology for Medical Assistants, medication administration routes and injection techniques, drug dosage calculations, most commonly used drugs, vaccinations and immunization.
